His show at Project Lodge is a character study of those he meets. Strangers, friends, fictional characters and versions of himself appear in his portraits. Blomquist gained his BFA in studio art from Clark College in Dubuque IA, where he studied under Tom Metclaf and Doug Schlesier. Justin’s work has previously been on display in Michaelangelo’s Coffee Shop.

“Who Are These People” will be on display March 15th – March 31st. Please join us for a reception March 20th at 6pm.

“One of the reasons that I love painting portraits so much is the ability to capture a person’s visage from a moment in time. My choice of subject depends on whether or not they grab my attention, for one reason or another. A gleam of the eye, or a worried look on their face, and I stop to wonder, what is their journey?

This show is a collection of the works I’ve created over the last 6 years and have managed to hang onto. I would like the viewer not to wonder who these people actually are upon seeing my pieces, but who the viewer perceives them to be” – Justin Blomquist

Volcano Insurance with Storyshare: Thurs March 18th http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/16/surrounded-by-reality-presents-volcano-insurance-thurs-march-18th/ http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/16/surrounded-by-reality-presents-volcano-insurance-thurs-march-18th/#comments Tue, 16 Mar 2010 06:27:32 +0000 plmsn http://www.theprojectlodge.com/?p=2449 Storyshare and Surrounded by Reality Night: Storytelling with the theme “On the Spot” with music by Volcano Insurance

Wisconsin Story Project (Storyshare event founders) was created in 2008 by Talish Barrow, Mike Lawler, and Christina Martin-Wright. The events held and stories told strive to connect a community of local artists while spreading a message of sustainability, local support of the arts, and engagement of the surrounding community.

“Wisconsin Story Project also believes strongly in localization – that means we want to not only tell local, Wisconsin-bred stories that matter to the people of this region, but that we also know that it is more important than ever to support the local, Wisconsin economy. The artists that work in this state are an important part of our economy, and continue to contribute in significant ways. WSP needs your support to create work that is relevant while providing employment and income to our regional artists.” – From the WSP website

Volcano Insurance , from Minneapolis and Madison is, according to reputable sources, “A trans-midwestern juggernaut of post-modernity.”

Luke Polipnick – guitar
Joey Van Phillips – drums
Chris Bates – bass

“the trio draws on diverse influences including Paul Motian’s trio, Miles Davis from the 60s and 70s, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell, John Coltrane’s classic quartet, Derek Bailey, Ralph Towner, Fat Kid Wednesdays, Happy Apple, and “various indigenous folks musics of the world.” Their My Space page describes their sound as “adolescent lust.” Volcano Insurance has appeared at the Dakota (late night series), Café Maude and the Clown Lounge.” – (From The Jazz Police)

Abe Vigoda, Gringo Star: Wed March 24th http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/14/abe-vigoda-gringo-star-wed-march-24th/ http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/14/abe-vigoda-gringo-star-wed-march-24th/#comments Sun, 14 Mar 2010 08:48:44 +0000 plmsn http://www.theprojectlodge.com/?p=2466
Abe Vigoda

Emerging like a phoenix from the hotbed of bands making their name at The Smell in LA (No Age, Vivian Girls, Mika Miko), Abe Vigoda take afro-pop melodic progressions and dirty ‘em up with loud, woozy, and angular guitar layers. Their 2008 LP ‘Skeleton’ is “sometimes a bit like a punked up version of Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ and other times like a Psychadelic Furs song being played in a church with all that room sound adding to the pop hooks. Rolling snare hits, busy high-hat work and frequent cymbal crashes keep Abe Vigoda’s music at an aggressive shuffle, the tempo and rhythm changing often; reverb, a short delay and a lot of treble make their guitars sound clangy and metallic, like steel drums or deranged church bells.” -Paste

Gringo Star
“This Atlanta, Georgia foursome add layers of rural lilt to their Brit-ish pop, garagey grit to others, while sneaking out slight-psych guitar blasts and gang yalps when least expected. If not the wheel rebooted, their self-titled full-length on My Anxious Mouth is stunningly seasoned for a debut.” CMJ.com

These Are Powers, Trin Tran: Fri, March 26 http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/13/these-are-powers-trin-tran-fri-march-26/ http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/13/these-are-powers-trin-tran-fri-march-26/#comments Sat, 13 Mar 2010 08:03:57 +0000 plmsn http://www.theprojectlodge.com/?p=2470 These Are Powers
Ferocious and unhinged, when These Are Powers perform live, it is a kind of spiritual journey, a futuristic fire dance hailing from Chicago and Brooklyn. The bass smolders, topping its low-end sub-rumble with a high-end flutter; abstract beats emanate from the electro-acoustic stand-up drum kit. And piercing through is Anna Barie’s guitar while she and Noecker call and respond. Barie blasts through a litany of expressive guitar sounds and full-throated yelps and howls with a confrontational, explosive energy that often finds her entangled with audience members, leaping through the air, or sprawled on the floor in front of the stage.

Trin Tran
Local one-man band extraordinaire! Plays guitar, drums, and piano all at once, resulting in a sonic maelstrom of electro pop-punk freakouts.
