The show opening will commence between 2pm-4pm on Saturday, March 6th.

Janis Finkelman, a 2008 graduate of UW Madison, works with paint and multimedia to create “layered” developments. Her paintings  explode from the canvas expressing energy through seemingly organic forms either at the microscopic level or largely unfocused macroscopic lens. Illumination, an undergraduate journal of the humanities, describes one of Finkelman’s pieces as a system of microbial components:

“The detailed nature of this piece suggests an organism or network comprised of smaller components that contribute to the structure of the whole. Through the compartmentalization of each spindly protrusion or globule, that which is depicted in this work operates in both small and large spheres.”

Logan Woods grew up on the Door Peninsula in Northern Wisconsin. He currently attends UW Madison, and is currently studying studio art and Russian. After graduating in May, he will begin study in Berlin. Woods incorpoates his interest in language and academia in his artwork with seamless intention via ink, paint, and mixed media:

“I believe very much in the sensuality of language, in the possibility to observe it as if having a corporeal existence of its own, and in the ability to draw illuminating comparisons between the limitations of language and the process by which we know ourselves and those we love.  We desire the unfathomable, but all we are and all we can know exists within the realm of the fathomable. By articulating precisely how we fathom, we articulate what we fathom. There is a territory that has within it both modes of reason and gestural expression.  I consider these compositions as made of ‘glyphs’, letter-like forms, due to their aesthetic as well as their process of creation. These compositions explore the empirical logic found in semiotics and linguistics, and their relationship with with what is visceral and empathetic. I believe defining this relationship  proposes a boundary of our self-awareness. I want this defined because it will point to the threshold of faith, and consequently all of the terrifying territory beyond it.”

LAARKS have a wikipedia page. We’re pretty impressed by that. You probably should be too. (Click to Enlarge)

In addition to having a very impressive internet presence (I mean Wikipedia! They’re  in the ranks of Bowie! Of political leaders! Of macrame!) LAARKS have gained recognition for their playful juggling of chaos and control in the realm of rock.

“Laarks’ Brian Moen wails on a drumkit that’s more than 70 years old. That’s amazing. At the time his instrument was crafted, our country hadn’t yet experienced Pearl Harbor.” -Pitchfork

“Combating the notion that Eau Claire is solely populated by flannel cloaked folkies, Laarks constructs smart, fun, danceable pop-rock…As Eau Claire prepares to hibernate for yet another bleak winter, let Laarks keep your ears and hearts warm with remnants of summer.” -Jonk Music

United Sons of Toil, Canyons of Static, Kings Horses: March 12, $5 http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/06/united-sons-of-toil-canyons-of-static-kings-horses-march-12-5/ http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/06/united-sons-of-toil-canyons-of-static-kings-horses-march-12-5/#comments Sat, 06 Mar 2010 05:39:54 +0000 plmsn http://www.theprojectlodge.com/?p=2429 The United Sons of Toil is a post-hardcore, noise-rock band, with a touch of math to even it all out. Add a dash of  aggressively pointed lyrics about imperialism, genocides, and colonialism and you got yourself an auditory stew goin’.

“The United Sons of Toil are a band from Madison WI. It’s precision Midwestern noiserock delivered by populist theoreticians. The Sons are a collective deeply rooted in the grinding noise and math rock that bubbled up from the Midwest during the mid ’90s. This is not suggest that the Sons are a retro band in any sense, simply that the hoarse vocals, guitar damage, starts and stops, and sometimes-convoluted arrangements and time signatures hark back to a time when labels like Touch and Go, AmRep, and Dischord lorded over the indie-rock landscape.

The Sons are Bill Borowski (The Arge, Atalanta, Knuckeldrager, Original Sinners) and Russell Hall (P’elvis, Pound WI). Jason Jensen is our new drummer” – (From The United Sons of Toil Myspace)

Canyons of Static offer up looming tidal waves of instrumental post-rock sound. hard guitar weaves in and out with a symphonic violin, slowly easing into a movement between rough and smooth musicianship.

“As tempting as it is to think this group would make some amazing soundtracks, a director would have to face the possibility that the music might be more captivating than whatever is happening onscreen. Perhaps not coincidentally, Canyons of Static regularly incorporate experimental films as backdrops to their performances. Without fuzztone or sitar, Canyons make psychedelia that provides a high without the aid of any mind-altering substances.” – (From Express Milwaukee)

Kings Horses … noisy noisy noise noise!

“Let it never be said that a hard rocking band couldn’t kick your ass at Monopoly. Beyond capitalism in board game form and army’s represented by wooden cubes, we like a good rock show. We believe that bands should set up fast, play the hell out of whatever they have and then run…RUN off stage so the next band can do the same.” (From the Band’s Myspace)

All Tiny Creatures, Jivas: Sat March 13th, $5 http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/05/all-tiny-creatures-jivas-sat-march-13th-5/ http://www.theprojectlodge.com/2010/03/05/all-tiny-creatures-jivas-sat-march-13th-5/#comments Fri, 05 Mar 2010 06:01:22 +0000 plmsn http://www.theprojectlodge.com/?p=2419 All Tiny Creatures + Jivas will envelope you in such a heavy blanket of sound, that we should probably just invite you to stay the night and feed you breakfast in your sound mind bed.

“Madison quartet All Tiny Creatures’ instrumentals blur the line between what a live band can do and what an electronics-obsessed experimenter can create alone at home. Even the keyboard sounds leader Thomas Wincek (also a member of Collections Of Colonies Of Bees) uses tend to reach for the early days of minimalist and ambient music, when looped instruments and experiments still sounded warm and analog, rather than sterile and contained. Wincek’s keys and computerized manipulations mesh pretty smoothly with the band’s live bass, drums, and guitar. The band’s new EP, Segni, spans from steadily upbeat tracks like “To All Tiny Creatures” to the shapely static and subtle buildup of “Street Lights Ten Thousand Feet.” – (The AV Club)
